How to create and demonstrate Training Value!

Effective training is a training program that provides useful and hands on knowledge and skills to the participants and the confidence to apply them on the job.

 However, very often the training programs are not achieving their goal. The most frequent reasons are:

  • Courses are not customized to meet employees and organization needs.
  • Facilitators can’t engage audiences.
  • Employees can’t fully disconnect from work during training.
  • Training material and means are poor or ineffective.
  • Interaction among facilitators and audience is not promoted enough.
  • The company culture doesn’t embrace change or expect excellence.

The fundamentals steps to create an effective training program are:

1. Planning:
  • Examine performance issues/ identify skill gaps.
  • Evaluate data: KPI’s, results from internal and external audits, incidents, non-conformities, changes in personnel, changes in procedures etc.
  • Assess stakeholders’ expectations.
  • Select the appropriate audience.
  • Establish goals for the training and set post training indicators that have to be measured.
2. Preparation of training tools and course content:
  • Gather information (from people, books, standards, procedures/job descriptions videos etc.).
  • Select the training method.
  • Define audio - visual aids.
  • Define Logistical arrangements – equipment needed.
  • Develop the training material (ppt, video, case studies, handouts etc).
  • Choose from a mixture of training means (brainstorming, On the job training, questions and answers, etc.).
  • Organize the duration of each part of the session and appropriate breaks.
3. Training presentation:
  • Assign the session to a competent presenter.
  • Enhance effective communication and engagement of the audience.
4. Evaluation of training effectiveness:
  • Assess case studies, complete questionnaires etc.
  • Use training evaluation tools (forms, etc.).
  • Implement post training evaluation – Measure the results (Measure skills’ improvement, behavioral changes, assess the impact on business level etc.).
  • Report the results and examine opportunities for improvement.
